STUDENTS! Scholarship Application Deadline Fri, Dec. 20th

Industry Scholarship Sponsors

Dear industry attendees,

For many years, industry participants in OPDMC have been asking for a way to lend financial support the event.  Now there is a way to support both OPDMC and the next generation of IPM specialists!

Last year, industry contributors like you helped raise $3400 in scholarship aid to support five graduate students attend OPDMC and present their research. 2019 contributors and student recipients are listed below.

Continuing for 2020 is the Student Travel Scholarship Program, a merit-based scholarship application for students, in which industry contributions will be pooled and used to support the travel costs of student recipients to attend and participate in OPDMC.

Industry contributions will be accepted in any amount, and sponsors will be recognized in the following categories: Bronze (up to $250), Silver ($251-$500), and Gold ($500+). Contributing organizations will be recognized in the conference program, as well as in the opening and closing business meetings.

Paypal donations accepted here.

The full Terms of Reference for the scholarship program are found here .  If you have any questions, or if you or your organization would like to contribute to the 2020 Scholarship fund, please email scholarship@opdmc.org.

Thank you,
The OPDMC Scholarship Committee:

2020 Keynote Speaker

Dr. Gary Judd completed his entire post-secondary education at Simon Fraser University, in Burnaby, BC, Canada, receiving an Honours B.Sc. in Marine Biology – 1979, MSc Pest Management Program – 1982, and PhD in 1987. In 1989, Gary began working at the Summerland Research and Development Centre (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada), where he continues to work in tree fruit Entomology and extension.

At Summerland, Gary met pheromone enthusiast Don Thomson. As scientist and technician, Gary and Don’s initial collaboration led to the first successful codling moth mating disruption project in Canada, and kick-started a career in tree fruit entomology.  Early research demonstrated the power of complementary technologies in managing a key pest, and for an emerging organic apple industry, it ensured successful implementation of a codling moth sterile insect programme (OK-SIR) in 1994. Dealt a semiochemical career inevitably entwined with SIT, Gary has endeavored to understand and improve this technology through many basic studies of codling moth behaviour.

Collaborations have allowed Gary to author and co-author over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, 175 extension articles and 7 Book Chapters. His Adjunct Professorship and role as Head Instructor of the Tree Fruit Pest Management course at SFU, since 1992, have allowed him to contribute to the mentorship of over 30 students and post-docs. He recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Pest Management Association of B.C. and was awarded an Honorary, Lifetime Membership in the Similkameen-Okanagan Organic Producers’ Association.

When not working, which is rare, Gary spends time tinkering with and driving his ‘65 Austin Healey, enjoying time in his garden, especially that in shared exploration with his six grandchildren. In the near future Gary hopes to rekindle a passion for fly fishing between times spent traveling the world with his wife and life friend, Linda.

Keynote Speaker 2019

Dr. Alan Knight, USDA-ARS

Tortricid IPM – A Career Well-focused

Dr. Alan Knight is approaching 30 years as a research entomologist with U.S.D.A., Agricultural Research Service in Yakima, WA and has given just over 100 talks at our annual meetings beginning in 1984. He has been a past Chairman of the meeting, many times a section moderator, and a proud rubber chicken recipient.

Knight received his bachelor’s degree in biology with highest honors from University of North Carolina in 1976 and his M.S. degree from the Botany Department in 1979. After several twists and turns he was awarded a PhD in entomology from Oregon State in 1986. Alan has authored or co-authored more than 200 papers in refereed journals and has been fortunate to be invited to write several book chapters and attend a range of international meetings and visit other researchers.

While in Yakima, Alan’s research has focused on developing tools that growers can use to effectively manage tortricid pests, such as codling moth, oriental fruit moth, and leafrollers. The breadth of this work has ranged from resistance monitoring to development of new attractants and adjuvants to improve monitoring, mating disruption, and the efficacy of insecticide sprays.

Dr. Knight remembers the old Imperial Hotel and the drinking and smoking in the bar after intimate meetings filled with colorful presentation by the old guard. Dr. Knight today acknowledges that he is part of the new Old Guard and will share his career highlights and his philosophical rants with us today.

OPDMC Deadlines Loom!

Deadlines loom for many items! Please see each section below.

Hilton Hotel Group rates – booking deadlines approach quickly!! Please register by Tuesday, Dec 4.

Applications for Student travel scholarships sponsored by our industry members are due by Dec 21st. Students don’t wait until the semester finals are over, get started early!

Scholarship sponsors – Contact scholarship@opdmc.org if you or your  company would like to sponsor a portion of this years student travel scholarships or click here for more information.

Pathology joins Entomology in one session!  The good news is no more running back and forth between meeting rooms.  The pathology group lost their leadership Tamala Blunt after many years fo service as she moved on to a new position. We were presented with the idea of helping pathology this year or they would not be able to coordinate their program. I look forward to working together as one group.

November 19 News Flash

Attention!

We have extended the deadline for presentation titles to Friday Nov. 23. Many people were attending the joint ESA, ESC, and ESBC meetings last week in Vancouver B.C. Please consider submitting your titles earlier this week rather than later. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Abstracts are due Dec 3., but you may submit them early as well.

The meeting will combine pathology and entomology talks into one session!  The good news is no more running back and forth between meeting rooms.  The bad news is that we will have to be selective in talks submitted due to the combined program.  Please send your titles an abstracts soon.

STUDENTS
Our industry membership wants to support students with FREE MONEY to attend OPDMC.  They are pitching in cash to help you attend and increase your public and professional visibility. Announcement with instructions will be sent out later this week. Keep an eye on your email. The turn around time will be short this year.

2018 OPDMC Meeting – 2nd Announcement

Greetings!

On behalf of the OPDMC committee we would like to remind you of 2018 Orchard Pest and Disease Management Conference, which is scheduled for Jan 10- Jan 12, 2018 at the Hilton Portland Downtown.  Please see important dates below.  We would like to thank Dr. Harvey Reissig for accepting our invitation to be this years Keynote Speaker!

Dr. Harvey Reissig is a Cornell University professor of entomology and stationed at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva.  He has helped to guide the statewide IPM program in tree fruits for over 30 years focusing much of his research on pests of apple with significant contributions to our understanding the biology and management of leafrollers and apple maggot.  His research into understanding and managing pesticide resistance in orchards is extensive.  Most recently he has served as the director of Pesticide Management Education Program at Cornell.

Reissig received B.S. and M.S. degrees in entomology from Kansas State University in 1969 and 1970, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in entomology in 1973 from Oregon State University (Go Beavers!). Harvey was named assistant professor in the Department of Entomology at Geneva in 1973, associate professor in 1978 and full professor in 1986. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 papers in refereed journals, many others in non-refereed research publications, and given numerous presentations at local, national and international levels.

Reissig is a member of the Entomological Society of America, the New York State Horticultural Society, the New York State Agri-Business Society and the American Wine Society.  Everyone that knows Harvey Reissig will attest that he is a wine enthusiast! He has visited wineries in the Napa and Sonoma regions in California and extensively toured Finger Lakes vineyards for 30 years. He also regularly serves on tasting panels and as a judge for wine competitions and has published regularly in The Fingerlakes Times under “The Grape Guru”.
